Safety Tips for Hanging Christmas Lights

Family hanging string lights

The holiday season is well underway after Thanksgiving just a few weeks ago. For many of us, this is a really exciting time for decorating your home for the winter holidays. Chief among those are holiday lights hung around your home. It can be a big task especially if you want to have the most impressive house on the block. We want to make sure you can hang your lights safely and as solar technicians who work with electricity and roofs every day, so we wanted to share our expertise! Here are some important safety tips for hanging your holiday lights!

Ladder Safety

Ladders can be very dangerous. Working as electricians we know how something seemingly mundane like an outlet can be dangerous if handle improperly. A ladder is the same way. You may not think of it as an important piece of equipment because you’ve always had one in your garage or shed, but it is and it needs to be treated with care.

Remember that most ladder injuries occur from falls of less than 10 feet. Keep 3 points of contact with the ladder at all times and have a family member steady the ladder and provide needed stability.

Electrical Safety

As for the electrical aspect of holiday lights, the most important safety tip we can share is to hang the lights with the correct materials. In this case, we are talking about insulated hooks. Use those over nails or screws which could cause a big headache for you. Also, if you want it to look good, we recommend that you check all of the lights and make sure they are lit up before you hang them all up!
